Holidaymakers heading to Egypt can look forward to a wide range of exciting opportunities, not least those found in the country’s desert. Culture

The Sinai Desert is home to both St Catherine’s Monastery and Mount Sinai itself – two of the most significant religious sites in the whole of Egypt It was near the Monastery that Moses is believed to have first seen the burning bush before journeying up Mount Sinai nearby to receive the Ten Commandments. Visitors today can follow in Moses’ foot steps, either literally or with the help of an obliging local camel.

Action and adventure

Just outside Sharm el Sheikh there are plenty of desert-based thrills and excitement to be found. It is easy and cheap to book a quad bike or a horse ride for an afternoon of fun. Those after a more authentic and prolonged desert experience can travel by camel through the Sinai’s secret valleys and hidden oases to the nearby and must-see natural features such as Coloured Canyon and, of course, Mount Sinai itself.

Resort centre

The centre of Sharm el Sheikh itself, of course, isn’t short on things to do while on holiday. In the heart of the resort centre, there are many lively restaurants, cafes, clubs and shops on offer. Most guides and merchants can be talked down in price, and there is plenty of good quality accommodation to be found, from guest houses to all inclusive Sharm el Sheikh hotels.

Excursions

Sharm el Sheikh can also be used as a base to enjoy Egypt’s desert attractions further afield.Holidaymakers can book one of the many day trips or overnight trips available to see the renowned sites of central Egypt, from the Great Temple of Giza in Cairo to the Valley of the Kings in Luxor. This can be done by selecting a ready made tour package, or for the more independently minded there are plenty of Egypt hotels in prime spots near the major sites that can be booked as part of an overnight adventure.
